Analysis of spacecraft anomalies
The anomalies from 316 spacecraft covering the entire U.S. space program were analyzed to determine if there were any experimental or technological programs which could be implemented to remove the anomalies from future space activity. Thirty specific categories of anomalies were found to cover nearly 85 percent of all observed anomalies. Thirteen experiments were defined to deal with 17 of these categories; nine additional experiments were identified to deal with other classes of observed and anticipated anomalies. Preliminary analyses indicate that all 22 experimental programs are both technically feasible and economically viable
One-parameter extension of the Doi-Peliti formalism and relation with orthogonal polynomials
An extension of the Doi-Peliti formalism for stochastic chemical kinetics is
proposed. Using the extension, path-integral expressions consistent with
previous studies are obtained. In addition, the extended formalism is naturally
connected to orthogonal polynomials. We show that two different orthogonal
polynomials, i.e., Charlier polynomials and Hermite polynomials, can be used to
express the Doi-Peliti formalism explicitly.Comment: 10 page
Tripartite entanglement and threshold properties of coupled intracavity downconversion and sum-frequency generation
The process of cascaded downconversion and sum-frequency generation inside an
optical cavity has been predicted to be a potential source of three-mode
continuous-variable entanglement. When the cavity is pumped by two fields, the
threshold properties have been analysed, showing that these are more
complicated than in well-known processes such as optical parametric
oscillation. When there is only a single pumping field, the entanglement
properties have been calculated using a linearised fluctuation analysis, but
without any consideration of the threshold properties or critical operating
points of the system. In this work we extend this analysis to demonstrate that
the singly pumped system demonstrates a rich range of threshold behaviour when
quantisation of the pump field is taken into account and that asymmetric
polychromatic entanglement is available over a wide range of operational
parameters.Comment: 24 pages, 15 figure
Recruiting hard-to-reach populations to physical activity studies : evidence and experiences
Most researchers who are conducting research with a public health focus face difficulties in recruiting the segments of the population that they really want to reach. This symposium presented evidence and experiences on recruiting participants to physical activity research, including both epidemiological and intervention based studies. Results from a systematic review of recruitment strategies suggested that we know little about how best to recruit and highlighted the need for researchers to report this in more detail, including metrics of reach into the target population such as number, proportion, and representativeness of participants. Specific strategies used to optimise responses to a population-based mail survey were presented such as study promotion, survey design, multiple mailings, and personal engagement. Finally, using place based recruiting via schools or places of worship to target ethnic minority youth were discussed. Overall the symposium presenters suggested that we need to learn more about how best to recruit participants, in particular those typically under-represented, and that researchers need to apportion a similar amount of planning effort to their recruitment strategies as they do the their research design. Finally we made a plea for researchers to report their recruitment processes in detail
Small gaps between products of two primes
Let denote the number that is a product of exactly two
distinct primes. We prove that
This sharpens an earlier result of the authors (arXivMath NT/0506067), which
had 26 in place of 6. More generally, we prove that if is any positive
integer, then
We also prove several other results on the representation of numbers with
exactly two prime factors by linear forms.Comment: 11N25 (primary) 11N36 (secondary
Characterization and properties of controlled nucleation thermochemical deposited (CNTD) silicon carbide
The microstructure of controlled nucleation thermochemical deposition (CNTD) - SiC material was studied and the room temperature and high temperature bend strength and oxidation resistance was evaluated. Utilizing the CNTD process, ultrafine grained (0.01-0.1 mm) SiC was deposited on W - wires (0.5 mm diameter by 20 cm long) as substrates. The deposited SiC rods had superior surface smoothness and were without any macrocolumnar growth commonly found in conventional CVD material. At both room and high temperature (1200 - 1380 C), the CNTD - SiC exhibited bend strength approximately 200,000 psi (1380 MPa), several times higher than that of hot pressed, sintered, or CVD SiC. The excellent retention of strength at high temperature was attributed to the high purity and fine grain size of the SiC deposit and the apparent absence of grain growth at elevated temperatures. The rates of weight change for CNTD - SiC during oxidation were lower than for NC-203 (hot pressed SiC), higher than for GE's CVD - SiC, and considerably below those for HS-130 (hot pressed Si3N4). The high purity, fully dense, and stable grain size CNTD - SiC material shows potential for high temperature structural applications; however problem areas might include: scaling the process to make larger parts, deposition on removable substrates, and the possible residual tensile stress
